I’ve been working as a nurse for more than 6 years now, have been rotated to different areas but what I can relate much, was like  the theorist herself, I had the chance to work as a psychiatric nurse for 2 years at Al-Hassa Psychiatric Hospital,Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.Imagine a Filipina nurse, 5 feet tall; weighing barely 41 kilos working in a psychiatric hospital that takes care of her mentally challenged patients twice or thrice her size. My experience prior to going in the Saudi Arabia was Medical-Surgical and Pediatric area but was shocked to get an assignment in a Mental Health facility. But the fact that Filipino nurses are versatile and flexible, I faced the challenge and the outcome is really priceless because it has contributed much to my professional growth. In the Medical-surgical area I learned how to manage physical pain, but in the mental health facility I learned how to manage emotional pain, which is Travelbees’ concept of “suffering- a feeling of unease, ranging from mild, transient mental, physical or mental discomfort to extreme pain and extreme tortured ...". I took care of patients with different backgrounds, ethnicity, socio-economic status, educated or non-educated, these patients all need to depend on someone especially at times when they suffer psychologically or socially.Hope is also emphasized by Travelbee, which is also very important with these patients since psychiatric illness especially the chronic ones have very poor prognosis. A lot of medications had been developed to manage the symptoms of mental diseases but the cure is a blur. Many patients suffer with the symptoms over and over again, and may have to live with it.In this kind of set up, what a nurse can do is develop a trusting relationship with their patient to built rapport and be able to assist them reach their goals, assist them to do their ADL’s to maintain their health, show sympathy, empathy and acceptance, and being able to use your therapeutic self.
