Goal of Nursing
To assist an individual or family to prevent or cope with the experience or illness and
suffering and, if necessary, to assist the individual or family to find meaning in these experiences
with the ultimate goal being the presence of hope.
Joyce Travelbee’s Human-to-Human Relationship explains how a nurse can deal with pain and suffering experiences by the patient and how can effectively cope with these situations.
In Critical Care Unit, communication is a very important factor to develop a good interpersonal relationship between the nurse and the patient. As a critical care nurse, understanding the agony and suffering brought by the client’s condition is the main focus of care. In this way, the nurse as an independent professional healthcare practitioner can conceptualize the nursing plans and interventions for his patient. By doing these, the nurse should establish rapport with the patient. Getting to know the patient and be involved on the pains and sufferings like you were there when it was started. The family should also be asked most especially if the patient is unable to do so. Nurses should always be at their side to listen to the patient and family and to keep the channel of communication open.
I believe that when our patient feels that you are concern with them and sincere with and you are treating them as a whole person and not just a patient who is sick and fragile, then trusting you as their nurse will follow. The goal of nursing will achieve as well as with the patient.
